How to Choose the Right Criminal Attorney

Hiring the right defense attorney makes a huge difference in your criminal case. When you begin searching for the right attorney for the criminal charges against you, it is imperative that you find one as quickly as possible to ensure that your rights are protected.

A defense attorney will be able to help defend you against criminal charges including assault and battery, domestic violence, drug possession, and DUI among others.

Your criminal defense attorney will work to lower your bond or bail, present your side of the story, negotiate for a better plea or sentence, protect your rights, and provide you with all the options you have to defend yourself against the criminal charges.

Depending on the type of charge such as a felony or misdemeanor and the specific charge, you need to find an attorney who is experienced in both, such as a felony DUI or misdemeanor domestic violence. You may find an experienced criminal defense attorney who has never been to court or trial for a case with your specific charges. It is always in your best interest to find a defense attorney who has a good track record defending the exact type of case that you have.

In some cases, the criminal charges may have you in front of a jury. You will need an attorney who has been to trial with a jury and understands the importance of proving your innocence or providing the jury with information causing them to have reasonable doubt as to the criminal intent of your crime, thus lowering your jail time or your acquittal.

Do not look through the telephone book and choose a defense attorney based upon their large ads. This can be a huge mistake. Remember, they are the ones placing the ad and can state whatever they want in the ad such as trial attorney, defense attorney, assault and battery attorney, domestic violence lawyer, drug possession lawyer, DUI attorney, and criminal defense attorney. This does not mean they are experts in all these fields, it just means they want your business.

In most cases, you can talk with a criminal attorney during a free consultation. If this is possible, ask questions regarding their experience. This could mean the difference with you going home or being sent to prison.
